Blend
1776 Tobacco Co Klompen Kloggen
Klompen Kloggen appears in the aromatic section of the 1776 Tobacco Company catalog, prepared under Sterling Tobacco Co. in Illinois. Per the maker's recipe, the blend is hand-mixed and contains shag-cut Burley, Virginia bright, long-cut Virginia, No. 10 Virginia, Carolina leaf, Connecticut shade-grown leaf, and Turkish Yenidje. Its name is a reference to Dutch tradition; the blend is also kept light in that style, calibrated so as not to bite the tongue. The Connecticut shade leaf and Yenidje in the mix add both mellowness and a light spiciness to the Burley-Virginia body. Since it stays measured in nicotine and taste, it falls into the all-day-smokable class. The brand takes its name from the takeover of a now-closed Pennsylvania tobacco shop called 1776; per records the blends were sold by mail, in bulk quantities.
