James Foster

An American pipe smoker and certified tobacconist known for his leadership of the Austin Pipe Club, his organization of the Texas Pipe Show, and his online projects for pipe enthusiasts.

James Foster is a pipe smoker, certified tobacconist, and event organizer who has contributed to organizing the Texas pipe community and to compiling pipe knowledge online. He is known to have taken up the pipe in the late 1990s, inheriting pipes left by his father and grandfather. He has carried his professional background in IT and marketing into the pipe world, and is known for his club leadership, show organization, and web projects.

Club and Show Work

Foster serves as president of the Austin Pipe Club. Beyond the club, he is counted among the hosts of the Texas Pipe Show, held in Texas, and his name is also associated with putting together the show's official website. In 2025 the show marked its tenth year in Midlothian, having previously gathered in Cedar Hill. Writers who have covered the show have noted that over the years it has grown to draw craftsmen and vendors not only from Texas and neighboring states but from across the country. How such local initiatives grow into lasting institutions is discussed more broadly in the entry on the history of pipe clubs.
