Novák

The workshop of Czech pipe maker Michal Novák in Prague; a small-scale operation, launched after a path that began in journalism, known for its sharp facets and unstained briar.

Novák is the name given to the pipes produced by Czech pipe maker Michal Novák in his workshop in Prague. Born, according to records, in 1954, Novák is not a craftsman who took up the bench as a child; he moved into pipe making after a long career in writing and photography. This late start has shaped both the scale and the working method of the workshop, keeping output limited to a small number of individually designed pieces each year.

From the Writing Desk to the Bench

Novák's first profession was journalism and photography. In the 1990s his interest turned toward pipe and tobacco publishing; he is said to have taken on the role of editor at a magazine published in this field. That role took him to pipe factories and workshops in Germany, Italy, and Denmark. The knowledge he built up over years of watching and writing about other people's work went on to form the basis of his own production. According to records, he has been a member of the Académie Internationale de la Pipe, which treats the pipe as a subject of research, since 1999.

His turn toward pipe making was shaped as much by a pipe he acquired from an acquaintance in Italy as by the relationship he built with his fellow Czech maker Jan Klouček. Novák worked in Klouček's workshop and has counted himself among the makers that workshop trained. The date of his move to independent production is inconsistent across sources; the general figure given is the late 2000s. Novák is counted among the generation of Czech makers who gained visibility in those same years.
