Pipe Brands
Alexander Tupitsyn
Russian pipe maker Alexander Tupitsyn, one of the three founders of PS Studio, is known for neoclassical shapes that combine Russian workshop discipline with the Danish line.
Alexander Tupitsyn belongs to the generation of handmade pipe makers who trained in Russia in the 2000s. His name is associated both with the PS Studio partnership founded in 2008 and with individual pipes carrying his own stamp. His work is considered an example where Russian workshop habits and a Danish-derived sense of form can be read on the same pipe.
The PS Studio Partnership
PS Studio was founded in 2008 as a three-person operation: the experienced maker Vladimir Grechukhin, together with Tupitsyn, then still at the start of his path, and Sergey Dyomin. Records give Tupitsyn's age at the time as twenty-five, and this date is taken as his transition point into professional production. Among its members the partnership was known simply as "the Project,"; rather than following a fixed model catalogue it adopted a working method built on shape experimentation.
Grechukhin was the guiding figure in how the workshop operated. As the two younger makers worked on briar, they settled their technical habits and shape repertoire under his supervision. The Saint Petersburg line, to which Grechukhin is considered affiliated, is regarded as one of the most distinct threads in Russian handmade pipe production; the compact, balanced proportions of that line, with stummels kept slightly thick, can also be traced in Tupitsyn's early work. The relationship was not confined to a brief apprenticeship period but continued as the partnership went on. Given that handmade pipe production in Russia rests on a narrow circle of makers, such transmission within a single workshop can be said to have directly shaped the younger makers' sense of form.
