Pipe Brands

Benaderet's

San Francisco's long-established tobacconist Benaderet's is known for house-branded pipes commissioned from English factories; when it closed in 1980, it was counted among California's oldest pipe and tobacco shops.

Benaderet's was a tobacconist and pipe shop that operated in San Francisco for much of the twentieth century. It never turned pipes on its own lathe; instead it sold pipes stamped with its own name by English factories. For this reason the brand is remembered not as a workshop tradition but as a typical American example of the house-brand tradition.

Founding and the Shop

According to information passed down in pipe circles, the business was founded by Sam Benaderet, an immigrant tobacconist. As the story goes, Benaderet came to the city for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco and stayed on the West Coast afterward to set up his own tobacco business. No firsthand document is known regarding the founder's origin or the exact founding year; these details have not been independently confirmed.

The business's first source of income was custom-labeled cigarettes prepared for clubs and private clients. The retail shop opened in the late 1920s and quickly became a gathering point for the city's tobacco enthusiasts; the store was known for years as "Benaderet's Cigarette, Pipe and Tobacco Shop." It is reported that in the business's final period ownership belonged to Robert and Edith Rashaw; because this information rests on a single chain of sourcing, it should be treated with caution.
