An American part-time pipe maker working out of a small outbuilding in his backyard in Noble, Oklahoma; known for freehand designs drawing on the Danish, Japanese, and Russian schools.
C. Kent Joyce is an American pipe maker working in the town of Noble, Oklahoma. He has worked in construction since finishing high school, and makes his pipes in a small outbuilding in his backyard, during hours left over from his main job. This one-man bench, producing around fifty pipes a year, has carved out a place for itself within the American artisan scene's expanding generation of the 2010s and has entered the catalogs of well-known retailers.
Scale of the Bench
Understanding Joyce's working arrangement is key to understanding his work. Part-time production makes it harder to keep an order list and turn out a series, but in exchange it lengthens the time given to each individual piece. The frequent attention retailer write-ups pay to the polish of the stem and the smoothness of the transitions relates to this arrangement. The hand skill built up over years of construction work is credited with contributing to his precision in dimensions and finish.
