Pipe Brands
Carmignani
The story of Carmignani, founded in Rome in 1892, which had pipe series made under its own name and is counted among Italy's best-known tobacconist shops.
Carmignani is the shared name of a tobacconist's shop that has done business in Rome for more than a century, and of the pipes it has had made under its own name. Having no lathe workshop of its own, but instead having pipes it selected or specified made by other craftsmen and sold under its own stamp, it is counted among Italy's best-known examples of the "shop brand" concept.
Together with Savinelli in Milan, it is regarded as one of the country's most established pipe addresses.
A Tobacconist in Rome
The shop's founding year is 1892. Emilio Carmignani, arriving from Castelfiorentino near Florence, opens a window selling pipes, tobacco accessories, and gifts on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the street linking the Quirinale to the Vatican. The family's second address is Via della Colonna Antonina, across from the parliament building; the date of this move differs in sources between 1927 and 1928, and it is noted that the business was run by the founder's sons Aldo and Nello.
Records show the shop began selling Dunhill pipes in 1919. In the interwar years this was not merely a point of sale but a haunt of Roman noble families, politicians, and literary circles; it is reported that the poet Trilussa was among its regulars. After the Second World War the product range expanded to include leather, silver, and gold gift items as well.
