Castoldi

Italian pipes made individually by hand by Enrico Castoldi in his Milan workshop; a recent workshop built on classic shapes and small-to-medium sizes.

Castoldi is a one-man pipe workshop run by Enrico Castoldi in Milan. It is known not for mass production but for singular pieces individually designed in their own right; the scale of production is small, and the shape vocabulary predominantly classic.

The workshop's place in the Italian pipe scene comes not from a family tradition spanning generations but from being a solo craft venture set up recently. This one-man-workshop model, which has come to the fore in Italy in the twenty-first century, puts a limited number of handmade pieces in place of factory production; Castoldi is assessed along this line as well.

Founding and Line of Training

Castoldi's first pipe dates to 2016. His professional background up to that date had nothing to do with pipes: he worked for roughly twenty years in advertising and fashion photography. That this work, which requires prolonged attention to detail, fed the discipline of his later workshop practice is a point he himself emphasizes.

According to records, the pursuit stopped being a side occupation in 2024; from this year Castoldi devoted all his time to pipe making at his workshop in Milan. It is noted that he pursued his technical development under the guidance of Gabriele Dal Fiume, one of the internationally recognized Italian makers. A master-apprentice bond of this kind is considered a customary form of transmission in the Italian workshop tradition.
