Pipe Brands
Caxra Pipe
A one-person workshop run by Indonesian artist Deden Hendan Durahman in Bandung, said to turn out only a handful of pipes a month.
Caxra Pipe is the one-man pipe workshop of Deden Hendan Durahman, who works in the city of Bandung in Indonesia's West Java province. Alongside his pipe bench, Durahman is also an active figure in the visual arts; he teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology and produces work in photography and digital printmaking. The brand is counted among the examples of Indonesian artisan pipe-making that gained visibility in the 21st century.
That visibility has largely been built through online channels; like most of the country's one-person workshops, Caxra is not the product of a longstanding factory tradition but of a personal bench.
Bench Setup and Production Scale
The defining feature of the workshop is its deliberately narrow capacity: records put output at no more than four to six pipes a month. This scale allows every piece to be carried through by one hand. Design is settled on paper before the pipe reaches the bench; a shape chosen from among a series of sketches is refined in detail, and only then is a block set aside to match that shape. Nearly every kind of surface finish is applied, but the workshop leans most heavily toward rustic finishes.
Classification is likewise a detail resting on a single source. Records describe the work as split into two grades; the groups called Signature, Holiday Pipes, Poy, and Anniversary are gathered in the top grade, while the rest of production is assessed in the second grade. The Edition heading refers to a series intended to be produced in a limited run of copies rather than as a single piece.
