Pipe Brands

Charles Fairmorn

A tobacco trading group made up of American, German, and Dominican companies sharing the same name; in the pipe world it is known for a small number of Danish-made freehands.

Charles Fairmorn is the brand not of a single workshop, but of a cluster of companies sharing the same name. The name turns up at interlinked trading and manufacturing firms founded in the United States, Germany, and the Dominican Republic. The center of gravity for these firms was the cigar and tobacco trade; pipes were only ever a sideline.

That is exactly why the brand has remained a point of curiosity among pipe enthusiasts: who made the pipes carrying this stamp, and where, remained unclear for a long time.

Founding the Trading Network

Records indicate the first company was founded in the US in 1972; a few years later, in 1978, the German branch began operating in Hamburg. The German company is said to trace its origin to an old Lübeck tobacco import house, though this connection is not backed by documentation. The American company closed in the mid-1980s, during a period when quality cigar consumption in the country fell noticeably; the center of activity shifted to Germany.

In 1996 the German company moved to Dingelstädt in Thuringia. Between 2000 and 2001 it set up its own production facility in Santiago, Dominican Republic, under the name Charles Fairmorn S.A.; this facility most likely produced cigars only. In 2006 the headquarters moved to Lübeck and the firm took the name Charles Fairmorn International GmbH. The trade register entry shows the company's stated scope of business was broad, covering import-export as well as brand trading, tobacco accessories, and various consumer goods.
