Chr Henrik

The name Danish advertising designer Henrik Christian Christensen used as a pipe maker; he produced a limited number of hand-shaped pipes from around 1965 until 1984.

Chr Henrik is the name Danish designer Henrik Christian Christensen stamped on his pipes. Pipe-making was not his actual profession: Christensen, records say born in 1929, earned his living as an advertising designer, preparing logos, advertisements, and promotional booklets for many Danish companies.

He is also said to have painted in his spare time, leaving behind a sizable body of oil work. Pipe-making remained a second pursuit he took up around 1965 and continued until his death in 1984; even so, the work he left behind carries a signature directly tied to the Copenhagen workshop scene of that era.

Pipes From a Designer's Hand

Christensen's pipes show clear traces of the approach known as the Danish school: freeform shapes that draw their strength from fluidity rather than symmetry, turning the transition between chamber and shank into a continuous line. This is not surprising; it is only natural for an eye trained in graphic design to treat wood, too, as a drawing surface. He is said to have experimented not only with form but with material combinations, adding other substances to the briar body in search of different appearances.

Production was entirely by hand, with no regular serial numbering or model lineup. The one distinguishing mark is the "Chr Henrik Denmark" stamp struck under the bowl; this stamp is the main way to identify a genuine example.
