Pipe Brands

Dr. Plumb's

A pipe brand, reportedly founded in 1925, known for the aluminum cooling tube fitted between the shank and mouthpiece; produced in France for many years before shifting to English manufacture under Cadogan.

Dr. Plumb's is a pipe brand that, according to records, emerged in 1925, owing its reputation to an aluminum cooling tube fitted between the shank and mouthpiece. The brand name is now held by A. Oppenheimer & Co. Limited; production and distribution are carried out under the same group's Cadogan Investments. Positioned not within the handmade master-craft tradition but within the series-production tradition, Dr. Plumb's represents the broad-based, everyday-use face of the British pipe industry.

Origins and the French Years

According to records, the brand was founded in 1925 by J. B. Rubinovich, sales manager of GBD's Paris office. Pipes were initially made in France's pipe capital, Saint-Claude, and stamped accordingly; the claim that production was carried out at the Ruchon & Verguet and Ropp workshops appears in sources but has not been confirmed by an independent archival record. Old Dr. Plumb's examples bear the inscription "France"; for collectors, this stamp is the first clue in roughly placing which period a pipe belongs to.

Exactly where the brand's name came from has not been fully clarified. The source of the name is cited as Leslie Watts Plumb, a British financial advisor who ran the administrative side of Saint-Claude production between the wars. This information rests on an account passed down through family circles and has not been confirmed by independent documents; the same account also states that Plumb contributed to the design and promotion of the cooling mechanism. What is certain is that the "Dr." Plumb figure was circulating in the trade press as a promotional character in the early 1940s.
