Eclesias Pipes

The one-man workshop of Czech pipe maker Pavel Holub in Kašava; a contemporary artisan signature known for its deep, sharp sandblast textures.

Eclesias Pipes is the name of the one-man workshop belonging to Czech pipe maker Pavel Holub. The workshop operates in the village of Kašava, in the east of the country, part of the Zlín region; production runs on commission and in small series, passing entirely through the maker's own hands. Within the wave of Central European artisans that emerged after the mid-2000s, the brand is particularly noted for its hard, deep sandblast surfaces.

Surface Work

The trait that made Eclesias's name is the sandblast texture rippling in waves along the bowl and shank, made of deep rings with sharp peaks. At first glance this surface has been debated at length in the community, giving the impression that sandblasting and hand rustication were applied together. Reportedly there is no such combination at play: the texture is achieved solely at the sandblasting unit, and the details of the settings used remain known only to the maker and a few close colleagues.

The workshop's repertoire is not limited to this one texture. More measured, traditional-looking sandblasts and smooth finishes are also made. All three finish types are often accompanied by contrast staining; the colour scheme ranges widely, from plain black body-and-bit pairings to the vivid, experimental combinations especially conspicuous on sandblasted examples.
