Pipe Brands

Frederick G Pipes

A small workshop in Tennessee founded by Frederick Garlinghouse, who moved from violin making to pipemaking; after the maker's death in 2006 his daughter kept the brand's site alive.

Frederick G Pipes is a one-man briar pipe workshop that American maker Frederick Garlinghouse founded under his own name. The brand is the product not of a large factory tradition but of the personal pursuit of a musician who turned to handwork late in life. Production never reached series scale; the pipes were shaped one at a time, directly at the maker's own bench.

From Violin to Pipe

Garlinghouse's first craft was not pipes but violins; before turning to briar he spent years making violins. As someone with musical training, he was accustomed to working wood and to fine measurement, and this background stayed with him when he changed benches. Records indicate he had been a pipe smoker for many years, and that his decision to make his own pipes grew out of ready-made brands failing to meet his expectations.

He was originally from Duluth, Minnesota, and it was around that city's tobacco shops that he first came to know pipes. In later years he settled in the town of Carthage, Tennessee, and set up his workshop there.

Health problems shaped the pace of his work in his final years; after suffering heart trouble, pipemaking became the main pursuit he was still able to keep up. This explains why the workshop never grew, and why production stayed limited to the capacity of a single pair of hands.
