Gigliucci Pipe
An Italian workshop run single-handedly by Andrea Gigliucci in Tuscany's Maremma region, producing a limited number of handmade pipes.
Gigliucci Pipe is the one-man workshop of Italian maker Andrea Gigliucci, working in Caldana, in Grosseto province, in the southern part of Tuscany's Maremma. No molds or outsourced work are used; every piece is shaped from start to finish on the same bench. According to the maker's own figures, annual output does not exceed about 150 pipes, which places the brand firmly at workshop scale rather than among Italy's large factories.
From Furniture to Pipes
According to Gigliucci's own account, he was born in 1968, likewise in Tuscany, in Follonica, and studied fine art in Bologna; beyond the maker's own statement, no independent record confirms these details. He began his career in woodworking, as a furniture maker, and, again by his own account, opened a restoration workshop in 1999. His first briar pipe, made in 2006, followed these years spent in wood; it can be said that his craft grounding, based on hand tools and a feel for texture, laid the technical foundation for the work that followed.
The region where the workshop is located is one of Europe's principal source areas for briar root. This proximity lets the maker follow the material from the log stage onward: he states that he selects the blocks himself from two local timber businesses and carries out the curing at his own workshop. On the stem side, he keeps to a single choice; of all stem materials, he uses only ebonite rod, which he cuts by hand.
