Pipe Brands
Giordano (Domenico Giordano)
The Giordano workshop, founded in the town of Badalucco in Liguria, supplying briar blocks to pipe makers around the world, and the story of its founder, Domenico Giordano.
Giordano is a briar-cutting mill founded in the town of Badalucco, in Italy's Imperia province, in the Liguria region. The workshop is less a pipe brand than a supplier to pipe makers: it prepares plateau blocks for handmade pipes and ebauchon blocks for factory production. Its founder, Domenico Giordano, was known in the trade simply as "Mimmo."
From Calabria to Liguria
Giordano's entry into the trade coincides with the period when briar was still a local industry in southern Italy. In the mid-twentieth century, Calabria was one of the regions sending raw blocks to pipe factories around the world, and cutting and sawing work was correspondingly a widespread craft there. According to the account, Giordano learned this trade at just twelve years old, alongside his father, who worked as a sawyer; when the workshop where they worked closed in the 1950s, the pair moved on to another sawmill in San Lorenzo.
As businesses in the south fell on hard times, experienced cutters moved toward Liguria, which was likewise rich in briar. Giordano was part of this migration and settled in the north in the early 1960s. For the year he opened his own workshop, he cites 1967 in interviews, while the company's promotional materials give 1968. Records state that he was born on 24 May 1941 in Melito di Porto Salvo, in Reggio Calabria province; he died in Badalucco, where he spent more than forty years of his life, on 28 November 2023, at the age of eighty-two.
