Hackert
A handmade pipe workshop run by Jake Hackert in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, known for briar as well as deer antler and corn cob bodies.
Hackert is a one-man pipe workshop run by Jake Hackert in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is not a mass-production factory but a craftsman's studio that shapes every piece by hand. Hackert's name is associated with freehand pipes made from briar as well as a habit of turning materials distinctive to North America into pipes.
The Workshop and Its Surroundings
Although the workshop's founding year does not appear in records, its name has been associated with Lancaster's pipe scene for decades. At the center of this scene for a long time stood the Demuth tobacconist shop: founded in 1770 and considered the country's oldest tobacconist, the shop stayed at its original address in the heart of the city, later dropping retail activity to become part of the Demuth Museum. That older records associate Hackert pipes with this shop should today be read as a historical detail. Alongside pipe making, the workshop also takes on repairs, and is known to shape bodies from wood species other than briar on request.
