Invicta Briars

An English workshop whose origins trace to a postwar pipe repair shop in Chatham, which began making its own pipes after 1974.

Invicta Briars is a small English workshop that makes briar pipes with a small number of hands. What makes the firm, which took its name in 1974, genuinely interesting is that it did not start out making pipes at all, but repairing broken ones; that repair-shop past still shapes the brand's character today.

The Early Years Spent on Repair

As the story goes, the workshop's core was set up in 1947 in Chatham, Kent's dockyard and garrison town; the address given is the old "Ragged School" building on King Street. These details rest largely on the brand's own promotional material and on Pipedia, and are not backed by an independent archival record.

The timing, however, fits the conditions of the period. In the postwar years briar blocks were scarce and expensive; overhauling a pipe already in hand was both easier and more in demand than making a new one. Until 1974 the workshop, under the name Medway, dealt only in repairs and, according to records, was considered the country's best-known pipe repair shop. The full form of the name varies across sources as "Medway Pipe Repair" and "Medway Briar Pipes Repair."
