Pipe Brands
J. Rinaldi Pipes
A one-man American pipe workshop run by Arizona-based photographer Jon Rinaldi, self-taught. Production has ended.
J. Rinaldi Pipes is the name of the one-man pipe workshop American photographer Jon Rinaldi ran in Sonoita, in southern Arizona. Not the continuation of any established production tradition, the workshop is the product of a craft interest taken up at a mature age, and operated for a total of only a few years.
Neither its founding nor its closing year is documented in any independent record; for this reason the brand is remembered more for the character of its work than for a precise timeline.
From Photography to Pipes
Rinaldi's primary trade is photography. Records show his work has been published in numerous outlets, and that he spent a long stretch teaching at photography workshops Arizona Highways magazine held statewide. He came to pipe carving on top of this visual background without training under any master; he developed his technique on his own, drawing on publications and knowledge shared within the craft community.
The workshop never moved to series production. Annual output stayed limited to what a single person's hands could produce; the brand accordingly became known not through a wide distribution network but through individually handled pieces. This scale is typical of the independent workshops that multiplied in America from the 2000s onward.
