James Gilliam (JSEC Pipes)

An American craftsman who settled in Germany after retiring from the U.S. Navy and hand-carves pipes stamped JSEC, one at a time.

James Gilliam is a craftsman who settled in Germany after retiring from the United States Navy and signs his pipes with the JSEC stamp. Though American-born, his workshop is based in Germany, so he is listed among both American and German makers — a dual affiliation that has led his name to appear in the brand directories of both countries at once.

From Repair to Making

Gilliam's introduction to the craft came not through making but through repair. After retiring, he began reconditioning worn briar pipes he owned using whatever tools he had on hand, and the results encouraged him to try carving pipes from scratch. This is the story passed down in trade listings and collector write-ups: restoration first, then his own designs. This period spent on repair also explains why his stem work is so often singled out for praise — the shaping of the bit and the tooth chamber receives particular care in his pipes.
