Jerry Zenn

A Taiwanese maker who moved from auto repair into pipe making and produces briar pipes inlaid with bamboo and horn in his workshop in Kaohsiung.

Jerry Zenn (曾朝陽) is a pipe maker whose workshop is located in Kaohsiung, in southern Taiwan. His name is counted among the few signatures representing Taiwan in international collecting circles. He is said to have turned to pipe making in the mid-2000s, after a long career in industry; this date has so far only been given as 2005 in the promotional copy of dealers who work with him, and has not been confirmed by an independent archival record.

The Taiwan Context

Taiwan has no deep-rooted tradition of briar pipe making; the island has long been associated more with the trade in tobacco and accessories. For this reason, the career of a solo maker like Zenn is built on self-teaching rather than master-to-apprentice transmission. He is said to have worked out every stage himself through trial — from selecting the briar block to cutting, coloring, and curing it — and only turned the workshop into a regular business after this period. For the points where artisan production diverges from factory production, see the entry on Artisan Pipes and Factory Pipes.
