Jopp (Uwe Jopp)
German pipemaker Uwe Jopp, working in the Saxon village of Dorfhain, brought his background in civil engineering to pipemaking and is known for his curved smoke channel (Bogenbohrung) technique.
Jopp is the name of the workshop run single-handedly by German pipemaker Uwe Jopp. Working in the village of Dorfhain between Dresden and Freiberg, Jopp took up pipemaking mid-career; by focusing the calculating habits he brought from civil engineering on the question of how the smoke channel should be drilled, he developed a signature all his own.
From Engineering to the Workshop
Jopp was born in Saxony and spent the early years of his career as a civil engineer, working in building design and on construction sites. Sources give differing dates for his birth year, so none is given here. His spare-time hobby of wood turning brought him closer to pipes; records indicate he made his first pipes in 2003. In this early period he worked out smoking behavior and hole geometry on his own, experimenting with free forms in the freehand spirit.
The Curved Bore: Bogenbohrung
In the classic method, the smoke channel is drilled as a straight line; in strongly bent pipes this leads either to a shortened channel or a distorted angle. From his earliest years, Jopp experimented with flexible drill bits to make the channel follow the shank's curve, and over time turned this method into his workshop's distinguishing trademark. Known in German as Bogenbohrung, the technique lets the smoke travel a longer path within the wood; according to the maker, this helps the smoke reach the mouth cooler. He has kept the details of the application to himself.
This technique has also given him freedom in stummel design: because the channel can follow the curve, the shank and bowl can be shaped without the constraints imposed by the need for a straight bore. According to Pipedia, the maker's own shapes named Flowfish and Saxonian Cobra likewise rest on this freedom; these names have not been confirmed in independent sources.
