Paronelli

An Italian family workshop founded in 1945 by Jean Marie Alberto Paronelli, making handmade briar pipes in Gavirate for three generations and founding a pipe museum in the same town.

Paronelli is a family workshop that has been making handmade briar pipes since 1945 in the town of Gavirate, in northern Italy's Varese province. The brand is known in Italian pipe making not only for the pipes it produces but also for its founder's effort to document and institutionalize the country's pipe culture.

Founder and Early Years

The workshop's founder is Jean Marie Alberto Paronelli, born in Gavirate in 1914. Records say he went to London at eighteen, learned pipe making within the tobacconist circles there, and, after returning to Italy, worked on the wholesale, design, and production sides of the trade. He founded his own brand in 1945. This date coincides with the period when the Italian pipe industry was recovering after the war and the Italian handmade pipe tradition was beginning to gain ground in the international market.

Records indicate that in the workshop's early years, Alberto Paronelli did the design himself while having the bodies worked by outside craftsmen; a significant share of the pipes sold in this period was stamped with the name Clairmont. In pipes of these same years, it is reported that, alongside the "Italy" mark and a reference to Sardinian briar, a gold-colored "P" or, at times, an anchor-shaped emblem was used.
