Teipen Handmade Briar Pipes
An American handmade briar workshop run by Wayne Teipen in the town of Cloverdale, Indiana, limited to a few dozen pipes a year.
Teipen Handmade Briar Pipes is a one-person pipe workshop run by Wayne Teipen in the small town of Cloverdale, in the US state of Indiana. The brand name comes directly from the maker's surname. The workshop is known not for serial production but for turning out only a few dozen pieces a year; this scale is one of the typical examples of the North American workshop pipe-making movement that has grown stronger since the mid-2000s.
Founding
Teipen's relationship with the pipe began as a smoker and collector; records date this interest to 2006, and his first own-made pipe to 2008. The bowl used in the first attempt was a ready-drilled briar block; on the bench there was nothing beyond a Dremel and a few files, rasps, and sandpaper. Once the result turned out to be a usable pipe, the pursuit became permanent, and both the tool inventory and the methods were gradually expanded in the following years.
The maker's way of learning departs from traditional workshop apprenticeship. According to the account, forums that bring pipe makers together and the accounts posted online by makers such as Tyler Lane Pipes became his main reference, and the stages of pipe making settled largely through trial and error. This path is the shared story of many American makers of the same generation.
