Pipe Brands
Tsutomu (Fukashiro Tsutomu)
The stamp of Tokyo-based master Fukashiro Tsutomu. Known for shapes close to the Danish line, the brand has an unusually high annual output for Japanese handmade pipes.
Tsutomu is the stamp bearing the name of Japanese pipe master Fukashiro Tsutomu, who works in Tokyo. One of the few names that come to mind when handmade pipes are mentioned in Japan, the master owes his reach to a wide domestic audience to two things: the Danish influence in his shapes, and a production volume considerably higher than his peers'.
Formal Language
The most talked-about aspect of the stamp is that his design approach leans on the Danish school rather than Japanese tradition. Flowing lines, measured proportions, and a solid body construction are the master's usual choices; the kinship between some of his models and Denmark's 1960s "reform shapes" is clearly visible. For this reason, a Tsutomu pipe, evaluated without knowing the brand, is often placed within the circle of the Danish school.
This same preference is thought to have limited the brand's course abroad. There have been attempts to promote Tsutomu pipes in America, but the stamp has not become widespread outside Japan; one reason cited within the community is that the pipes' look does not give the impression of Japanese work.
