Pipe Brands
Weber Pipe Co.
An American pipe company founded in New Jersey in 1938 by Bavarian-born Carl B. Weber, producing at scale in the mid-price tier and supplying countless tobacconists with private-label pipes.
Weber Pipe Co. was a large-scale manufacturer that fed the everyday tier of the mid-20th-century American pipe market. Its founder, Bavarian-born Carl B. Weber, was born in 1890 according to records and emigrated to the United States in 1911 at the age of twenty-one. The business he founded operated under the name Weber Briars Inc. at its Jersey City, New Jersey address in 1938; in later years the company was known as Weber Pipe Co.
Price Tier and Production
Weber never tried to compete with expensive handmade pipes aimed at collectors. The company's chosen ground was the mid-price, mid-quality tier: machine-assisted mass production from imported briar blocks, a broad range of classic shapes, and an unpretentious approach to finishing. This choice made Weber one of the highest-volume American pipe producers of its era.
Pipes sold under its own name are stamped with the word "Weber" inside an oval frame; this stamp remains the most practical way today to trace a stummel back to Weber in the secondhand market. Recognized makers are also said to have worked at its benches; the name most often cited in this context is Anthony Passante, frequently confused with Tony Pesante.
