Zehnder Pipes
An American handmade pipe brand founded by Yosef S. Zehnder in 2019 and run out of a one-person workshop in the American Midwest.
Zehnder Pipes is the brand of American handmade pipes produced in Yosef S. Zehnder's one-person workshop. The brand was founded in 2019. The bench was first set up in eastern Washington State and relocated to the Midwest of the country in later years; dealer and workshop records currently give Springfield, Missouri as the address, though the exact date of the move is unknown.
Zehnder is counted among the young generation of American makers who set up a bench in the late 2010s and quickly drew collector interest.
Style and Craftsmanship
Zehnder's approach to shape draws on three separate strands: the freehand tradition of the Danish school, the organic line construction of Japanese pipes, and classic Anglo-French molds. The resulting repertoire ranges from one end faithful to recognizable molds to the other end fully open to freehand interpretation; dealer catalogues show shapes such as author, billiard, blowfish, egg, horn, lumberman, and panel.
Bowls are worked from briar. According to the same catalogues, materials such as boxwood, horn, and mammoth ivory come into play for bands and transition pieces; mouthpieces are hand-cut and polished. Both smooth and sandblasted surface finishes are used. Because the workshop is a one-person operation, production remains limited; no figure is given in the sources for annual output.
