Reprints of Old Pipe and Tobacco Books

How pipe and tobacco literature out of print for a century has returned to circulation through print-on-demand, and where these reprints can be trusted and where they should be treated with caution.

Reprints of old pipe and tobacco books describes how a body of literature long out of print has returned to circulation over the past twenty years through scanning and print-on-demand. Titles once found only in secondhand bookshops or the rare-books sections of major libraries now appear simultaneously in the catalogs of dozens of separate publishers. For the researcher, this abundance is a convenience, but it has also created a sorting task with respect to print quality and bibliographic accuracy.

The Public-Domain Threshold

The legal basis of this wave is the expiration of copyright terms. In the United States the term for published works is ninety-five years; as of January 1, 2026, books published before 1931 are considered public domain, and the threshold advances by one year each New Year. Because the term varies from country to country, a given title may be free in one country and still protected in another. The bulk of pipe and tobacco literature — 19th-century trade manuals, agricultural and customs studies, poetry collections, museum catalogs — falls behind this threshold and has therefore been opened up to mass reprinting.
