Pipe Brands
Amadeus Pipes (Achaiki Amadeus)
A Greek workshop founded near Patras, one of the world's leading briar block suppliers, which also produced pipes under its own name. It ceased operations at the end of 2016.
Amadeus Pipes, formally Achaiki Amadeus S.A., is a briar business founded in Demenika, near Patras in western Greece. In the pipe world the brand is known under two identities: it produced pipes under its own name, while also selling worked briar blocks to factories and individual makers around the world. Over time the second line of business overshadowed the first, and the company name came to mean, for most pipe enthusiasts, simply "where the material comes from."
Founding and Family Tradition
The core of the business was eight masters with decades of experience cutting briar root. According to the company's own materials, these masters carried three generations of accumulated briar-production knowledge behind them. Sources disagree on the founding date: some records say the family opened its own sawmill in the 1970s, while Greek trade-press files give the corporate entity's registration as 1995. The safest reading is that the family entered the cutting business in the 1970s, with the corporate structure formalized later. The business is associated with the Minetos family; its public face was Makis Minetos, who handled contact with the international pipe community and occasionally gave interviews.
