Pipe Brands
Vauen
With roots reaching back to 1848, Vauen is Germany's oldest pipe factory still in production. Its 1934 Dr. Perl 9 mm activated-charcoal filter laid the foundation for the German school of pipe smoking.
Vauen is Germany's oldest pipe factory still in production. The brand's origin traces to the business founded in Nuremberg in 1848 by Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener, regarded as Germany's first pipe factory; production continues in the same city today. Vauen's true fame in the pipe world, however, rests on having developed the world's first 9 mm activated-charcoal pipe filter, thereby laying the foundation for the filtered-smoking tradition known as the "German school."
History
The factory founded by Ellenberger and Ziener merged in 1901 with the Gebhard Ott pipe factory, which had been operating in Nuremberg since 1866, and the company took the name "Vereinigte Pfeifenfabriken Nürnberg" (United Pipe Factories of Nuremberg). Today's brand name was born in 1909: Adolf Eckert derived a memorable name from the initials of this long title. Since the letter V is pronounced "fau" and N is pronounced "en" in German, combining the pronunciation of the two letters produced the spelling VAUEN.
Ernst Eckert, from the Ott family, took the helm of the company born from the merger; the period in which the brand established its place in European and overseas markets began under his leadership. Adolf Eckert, who coined the name, represents the generation after him. The person who rebuilt the factory after the devastation World War II left behind in Nuremberg was Adolf Eckert's son, Ernst Eckert, who shared his grandfather's name; with this recovery the company regained its international standing.
The company has remained in the Eckert family for generations; company sources emphasize that it has stayed a family firm since its founding. From 1982 Alexander Eckert, of the fifth generation, ran the firm. Martin Ramsauer, who joined the company in 2016, became co-managing director in 2018; that same year Julia Eckert, of the sixth generation, also began working on the marketing side. On 1 June 2026, Florian Eckert took over as managing director, joining his wife Julia Eckert in representing the family's sixth generation. This family continuity is regarded as a rare example of stability in the European pipe industry.
