Armentrout: an American Bench Out of a Desert Town
The workshop of Nathan Armentrout, working in Lancaster, California, which grew from hobby scale into a one-man bench producing a limited number of handmade pipes.
Armentrout is the handmade pipe bench Nathan Armentrout runs on his own. The workshop is in Lancaster, a desert town north of Los Angeles in California, where the maker was born and raised. Armentrout's actual profession is not pipe making; records indicate he teaches middle-school science and runs his bench alongside this job.
This dual arrangement also explains the brand's most defining trait: the number of pipes produced each year is small, while the time given to each piece is long.
Founding of the Bench
Armentrout's introduction to pipe making dates, according to records, to around 2009. The starting point was a curiosity familiar to most American craftsmen: a few attempts with ready-made kits and a wish to see whether a briar block could be shaped by hand. These early attempts made no claim in terms of form; what endured was the pursuit itself.
In the years that followed, the work outgrew hobby scale. Serious equipment was acquired, from a lathe to a sandblasting setup, a workshop suited to regular work was established, and technical gaps were closed through time spent alongside experienced names. The brand is counted today within the generation of individual American workshops that gained visibility after the 2000s; the general framework of this generation is covered in the entry on pipe making in the United States.
