Pipe Brands
BBJ Piber (Børge Blume-Jensen)
A one-person workshop founded in 1996 by Danish maker Børge Blume-Jensen in southern Sjælland. A small-scale signature brand producing a few dozen pipes a year, working classic shapes with a jeweler's discipline.
BBJ piber is a one-person pipe workshop signed by Danish maker Børge Blume-Jensen with the initials of his own name. Blume-Jensen began carving pipes regularly in 1996 and has worked ever since at his rural workshop in the south of the island of Sjælland. Production has never scaled up to a factory level; the brand has stayed limited to a few dozen pipes a year, making BBJ a typical example of small-scale signature workshops within the Danish school.
The Master's Path
Records place Blume-Jensen's birth in the mid-1950s and his first contact with pipes in his youth. He carved his own first pipe at fifteen from a pre-drilled "hobby block" bought from Brakner, a pipe factory operating in his hometown of Sorø. This was not his profession: he completed his training as a jeweler in the early 1980s, ran his own workshop in that field until the early 1990s, and afterward spent many years directing a music and culture school in Ringsted. As long as he held a full-time post, pipe making remained a leisure pursuit; the time he devoted to the bench increased markedly after his retirement in the late 2010s. At his fresh start in 1996, guidance from a local pipe master was decisive. He sourced his first briar blocks and stems from the Stanwell factory in Borup. In later years he has himself stated that he drew on the assessments of well-known Danish masters such as Jess Chonowitsch, Kjeld Sørensen (Red Hat), and Tom Eltang.
