Pipe Brands
Jess Chonowitsch
Danish pipe maker Jess Chonowitsch (c. 1947–2025). He trained under Poul Rasmussen and Sixten Ivarsson, moved to his own bench with his father in 1970, and is known for his bamboo-shanked pipes and bird stamp.
Jess Chonowitsch (per records, 1947 – 28 November 2025) is, with a bench career spanning more than forty years, one of the most cited names of the Danish school. He belongs to the generation that saw the pipe as a signature rather than a brand: his pipes came from a single hand start to finish, with factory organization never entering any stage of production.
Apprenticeship in Copenhagen Workshops
His father, Emil Chonowitsch, opened a tobacco shop in Copenhagen with his wife right after the Second World War, and after more than twenty years running the business, turned to handwork, beginning to work as a repairer at Poul Rasmussen's bench. Jess's first choice was not pipes; he had begun veterinary studies, but this education was cut short by structural problems with the school building. In the mid-1960s, first as summer work, he joined the same workshop alongside his father.
His early years were spent at the repair bench; every pipe that passed through his hands became an example of how the material behaved. Rasmussen's teaching method was indirect: he did not demonstrate technique step by step, only set out the result that had to be reached, leaving the path there to his apprentice. After Rasmussen's sudden death in 1967, Jess moved to the W.Ø. Larsen factory and worked under foreman Hans "Former" Nielsen.
The real turning point was the bench of Sixten Ivarsson; for a time he worked mornings at Larsen and afternoons at Ivarsson's. Ivarsson likewise did not lay out formulas: he would ask his apprentice to make the pipe however he thought it should be, then critique the finished piece, expecting him to find the reason for every flaw himself. Chonowitsch counted these two years as the main source of his hand knowledge. During the same period he completed his eighteen months of compulsory military service.
