Davorin

A workshop carrying the signature of Croatian pipe maker Davorin Denović, known for pipes made from bog oak, that is, morta, left in a swamp for thousands of years, and for a stamp drawn from the Glagolitic alphabet.

Davorin is the small-scale workshop signed under his own name by a Croatian pipe maker working in Zagreb. The maker's surname appears in sources as Denović; the diacritical spelling has not been confirmed by independent records. Within the community, the workshop's name is associated above all with morta — oak that has turned semi-fossilized after thousands of years in swamps and riverbeds.

The maker has also served as chairman of the Zagreb-based "Lula" Pipe Smokers Association, keeping pipemaking as a pursuit alongside his main profession.

An Identity Built on Material

The workshop's current identity is the result of a search for material. The maker first worked with briar, then tried olive wood, and finally made morta his main material. The briar he uses comes mainly from the Adriatic coast; by his own account, Croatia is a country favorable for both briar and olive wood, and was in the past considered a significant region for clay pipe production.

For sourcing morta, he works with a carpenter known in records only by the first name Darko; no surname is given. The material is drawn mainly from the valleys of the Sava River and its tributaries, with pieces ranging in age from a few centuries to thousands of years. In the workshop's own promotional material, the oldest piece is said to come from the Krapina River and to be roughly 8,290 years old; this figure has no independent confirmation. Time spent underground enriches the wood mineralogically, darkening or otherwise altering its color accordingly. Alongside black, the maker's account mentions tones he calls "gold" and "copper," as well as experiments with rarer red and blue veining. For the material's general properties, see the entries on morta and pipemaking from morta.
