Ebenhart's Handmade Pipes

A handmade pipe workshop run since 1993 by Ebenhart Botha in the town of Calitzdorp in South Africa's Western Cape, built on native hardwoods and Afrikaans shape names.

Ebenhart's Handmade Pipes is a small handmade pipe workshop operating in the town of Calitzdorp in South Africa's Western Cape province. The name behind the workshop is Ebenhart Botha; according to its official presentation he has been carving pipes since 1993. Since few pipe workshops on the African continent have survived to the present, this one-man shop in Calitzdorp is counted among the continent's rare examples of pipe production.

The Maker and the Workshop's Establishment

The person who trained Botha is the German-born pipe maker William Mattner. According to records his training period under Mattner spans 1993 to 1995; this information rests largely on the maker's own account and has not been supported by an independent document. Even so, the Central European working habits of the Mattner line can be traced in the proportions and finishing sensibility of the Calitzdorp workshop.

Over the years the workshop grew into more than just a bench. Today the same address is known as a mixed venue holding a pipe workshop alongside a dining section and other crafts such as knives.
