Pipe Brands
Jan Andersson
A Swedish writer, collector, and longtime secretary of Svenska Pipklubben who documented the Scandinavian handmade pipe tradition.
Jan Andersson is a Swedish researcher, collector, and club figure who put the Scandinavian handmade pipe tradition into writing. His name stands not for a brand but for a documentation effort: he recorded, through direct conversations with the makers themselves, the workshop culture that emerged in Denmark in the second half of the twentieth century and spread to Norway and Sweden. Today, much of what many reference sources know about Scandinavian makers derives, directly or indirectly, from material Andersson compiled.
His Books
Andersson's first substantial work was a monograph on Bo Nordh. According to trade records, Bo Nordh, Pipemaker was published in English in the late 2000s, with a later edition carrying the Briar Books Press imprint. The book stands out for gathering together nearly all of the shapes the maker designed; in this respect it functions as a collective shape catalog for readers who have no chance to see the pipes individually.
His second and more comprehensive work, Scandinavian Pipemakers, appeared in 2012 after four years of preparation. A heavily illustrated, substantial volume, the book brings together more than fifty makers from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway within a single narrative. The transition between generations is made especially visible here: the main thread the book follows is how the workshop ethos shaped around Sixten Ivarsson carried through to later names such as Jess Chonowitsch and Eltang. Andersson is also said to have prepared a standalone work devoted to Tom Eltang; the details of this book have not been confirmed in independent records.
