Pipe Brands
Jirsa
A Czech family workshop founded by Oldřich Jirsa in 1994, producing in Rynholec near Prague; known for combining CNC-assisted batch production with hand craftsmanship and its own house-made stems.
Jirsa is a pipe workshop in the Czech Republic that carries the name of Oldřich Jirsa and today runs as a family business. Production is concentrated in the town of Rynholec, west of Prague. The brand is known among Central Europe's small-scale pipe workshops for its consistent craftsmanship and its distinctive shape interpretations.
Founding and the Maker
That founder Oldřich Jirsa began pipe making in 1994 is stated consistently both in his own account and in promotional material written about the brand. As the account has it, Jirsa trained professionally as a mold maker, and came to woodworking through souvenir items sold in Prague; a collector's commission for a figural pipe bowl is what drew him into this field. The workshop has moved location several times since its founding, keeping production at the scale of small series.
The brand is considered a late link within the Czech lands' long pipe-making tradition: workshop production, carried on in the region since the nineteenth century, was largely consolidated into state enterprises in the second half of the twentieth century and, after the 1990s, redistributed once again among small independent workshops. Jirsa is one of the businesses born within this second wave.
