Kemperling

Austrian pipe factory founded in Vienna in 1834 and continued in Mattsee after 1944; known for its briar pipes as well as Tyrolean pipes and carved wooden figures.

Kemperling is one of Austria's longest-lived pipe manufacturers. The business traces back to the workshop founded by turner Anton Kemperling in Vienna in 1834; production moved after 1944 to the town of Mattsee near Salzburg, and the brand survived into the twenty-first century as the country's last factory-scale pipe maker. Listed in commercial records under the name "Kemperling & Sohn Salzburger Pfeifenfabrik," the business was passed down through four generations within the family.

From Vienna to Mattsee

Nineteenth-century Vienna was an important Central European center both for turnery and for the pipe trade, and Kemperling was born as a turner's business in that setting. Shifting production to the Salzburg lake district during the years of the Second World War turned the business from an urban craft workshop into a small factory rooted in the countryside. The permanent facility in the town was built on the lakeshore in 1972. It is reported that the factory's fourth-generation owner, Dieter Kemperling, died in 2021 and that production stopped after that date; the company's removal from commercial registers also points to this period.
