Pipe Brands
Kent Pipes (Kent Rasmussen)
A Danish workshop in Aarhus run by Kent Rasmussen, who moved from contemporary art to the pipe bench, and whose pipes are graded with star and butterfly stamps.
Kent Pipes is the pipe brand of Danish maker Kent Rasmussen, carrying his own name. Rasmussen came to the bench in his late thirties, leaving behind a technical drafting education and over a decade in contemporary art. The brand is counted alongside the Danish school line, part of the generation of makers who became visible in the late 1990s.
From the Art Years to the Pipe Bench
Rasmussen was born in 1961 in Randers, on the Jutland peninsula. In 1981 he completed technical assistant training for the construction sector — assisting architects and engineers. From 1988 he worked as a self-taught artist producing painting, photography, and sculpture; some of his pieces combined these forms in ways close to relief. He left this field in the late 1990s.
His first contact with pipe making dates to 1994; after a handful of attempts that year, he did not return to the bench for four years. The brand's start is taken as 1998, since he took up the work on a regular basis that year. He soon met Teddy Knudsen, one of the country's well-known makers; the founder's own account places this meeting in February 1999, while some maker profiles give 1998.
