Libre Real Briar

A Lebanese pipe manufactory founded in Beirut, using an internal steel filter in all of its products and selling mainly into the Middle East market.

Libre Real Briar is a Beirut-based Lebanese pipe manufactory. Combining briar imported from Europe with local labor and local supporting materials, and selling most of its output into the Middle East market, the workshop is one of the regional manufacturers whose name rarely appears in Europe- and America-centered pipe literature. Records show George Daoud's name at the head of the business; trade information lists him together with Gabrielle Daoud.

Founding and Records

The founding year has not been settled. A 2007 Italian pipe-community bulletin states the business was founded in 1985; trade directory records show 1991. As no independent document supports either date, both should be read with caution. The business's address is recorded in the Burj Hammoud and Sad al-Bouchrieh (Cedide) districts north of Beirut; the firm is noted as a member of the Lebanese Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Production and Technical Features

The workshop's most distinctive technical choice is using an internal steel filter in every pipe it makes. This is a regional application of the approaches examined under pipe filters and systems, which pass the smoke through a metal element before it reaches the mouthpiece, and it gathers the brand's entire line around a single mechanical principle.

In terms of raw material, production splits in two: briar blocks are imported from Europe, while the remaining components are sourced in Lebanon. The only figure available on scale is the firm's own statement: in 2007 a monthly capacity of five thousand pipes was cited. This figure, not independently verified, describes more of a manufactory sharing out the work coming off the bench than a collection of one-man workshops. That same year, it was also reported that black pipes were finished entirely by hand. That craftsmanship changes depending on whether a pipe is smooth-polished, sandblasted, or embossed is a familiar distinction in the trade, as described under surface finishes; however, which treatment is applied on Libre Real Briar's black line is not clear from the records.
