Luiz Lavos

A Brazilian handmade pipemaker, active since 2020, who joins the measured line of Danish functionalism with Brazil's own local materials for an international collector base.

Luiz Lavos is a contemporary handmade pipemaker working alone in Brazil. His pipes join the Danish school approach, which puts proportion and smoking comfort ahead of decoration, with Brazil's own materials in the same body. Though his history in the craft is short, his work reached collector circles in Europe and North America within a few years of going on sale.

Shape Language and Materials

At one end of his repertoire stand rustic-surfaced apple bodies that have become identified with his name; at the other, sculptural freehand compositions. What links the two is precise internal work and unexaggerated proportion; these are cited in collector circles as the distinguishing marks of his work. Alongside smooth polished finishes, rustication appears frequently on the surface.

He uses Italian briar for bodies and black German ebonite for stems; he occasionally works bog oak and turns to colored ebonite, horn, acrylic, or Ivorite for the stem. His true signature shows in bands and extensions: Brazilian cattle horn, bamboo he collects himself, and Amazon palm seeds such as jupati and patauá. Mammoth ivory, amber, boxwood, olive wood, and brass also appear in his repertoire.
