Pipe Brands
Non Canta La Raganella
A historic Italian pipe brand founded by Alcide Duranti in the Marche region, known for the moisture chamber built into its shank and for the DAC stamp.
Non canta la raganella is one of the few pipe brands to take its name directly from the problem it set out to solve. The long name, Italian for "the tree frog isn't singing," refers to the gurgling sound made by condensation collecting in the shank during a smoke; smokers of the day are said to have compared this sound to a tree frog's croak.
The brand was founded in the town of Castelfidardo in the Marche region by Alcide Duranti; sources date its founding to the last quarter of the 19th century or the first years of the 20th.
The Technical Idea Behind the Name
Duranti's solution was a partitioned air chamber set into the shank. This cavity was meant to hold the condensation that built up during a smoke before it reached the mouthpiece, cutting out both the sound and the bitter liquid reaching the mouth. In those years the same problem was more commonly solved through porous meerschaum; for smokers who couldn't afford a meerschaum pipe, Duranti's mechanism was a more accessible solution. The idea is counted among the early and notable attempts to manage moisture through a simple mechanical measure built into a briar body.
