Pipas Arguello MA
A handmade pipe signature that works with South American hardwoods, especially the purple wood called nazareno, in place of briar, and is known for tagua inlays.
Pipas Arguello MA is a one-person handmade pipe signature that chooses to work with local hardwoods in a field where briar is treated as the only valid pipe wood. The workshop's name appears in Spanish-language pipe forums and pipe encyclopedia entries in the early 2010s; the full identity of its founder, the year it was founded, and the city where the workshop is located are not on record.
According to available records, production runs piece by piece rather than in series, and every pipe is considered one of a kind.
Choice of Material
The workshop's principal material is a wood known as nazareno. With the botanical name Peltogyne purpurea, this species grows along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and Panama and in northern Colombia; its heartwood is dark purple with dark grain. The tree can grow up to fifty meters tall; the wood's density reaches 0.8-1 g/cm³, its natural durability is high, but it is demanding to work both by hand and by machine. The species is classified as "vulnerable" (VU) under IUCN criteria and carries the same status in Colombia's red list of threatened timber species; felling it is banned in Costa Rica and Panama. That it reaches the market only in small blocks also limits how much of it the workshop can use. Records mention that alongside nazareno, flor morado, ebony, and occasionally briar are also used. Such a preference places the workshop close to the tradition of small makers who build pipes with woods other than briar.
