Poliński

A Polish family workshop passed down through generations in Przemyśl, known for the large-bowled, short-shanked, rustic-surfaced handmade pipes of Tadeusz and Celina Poliński.

Poliński is a family pipe workshop operating in the city of Przemyśl in southeastern Poland. The bench, bearing the name of Tadeusz Poliński and his wife Celina, is counted among the oldest of the independent pipe workshops in the city, and is known today for its large, hand-shaped pipes.

The Workshop's Origins

Przemyśl is one of the centers of Polish pipe making; records of pipe production in the city go back to the last quarter of the 19th century. The Poliński workshop grew out of this tradition: at its core is the small pipe- and cigarette-holder-making shop of Celina's father, Kazimierz Sochacki. Tadeusz Poliński, who started out as a machinist, learned the craft in this shop; according to sources, he took over production under his own name in 1978, following his father-in-law's death. Celina's joining the business as a partner came in the mid-1980s.

Records say pear wood was used in the workshop's early years, and that briar blocks became the main material of production only in the early 1980s. This shift is tied to the limited access to imported material under the Eastern Bloc conditions of the time; the first batches of briar are said to have come from Albania. In later years the workshop is reported to have turned to Italian- and Spanish-sourced blocks. Starting with local woods such as pear before moving to briar is a path followed by many benches across Central and Eastern Europe; for further detail see pipes in woods other than briar.
