Pipe Brands
Romeo Pipe (Mimmo Romeo)
Hand-shaped Italian pipes produced under his own name by Domenico "Mimmo" Romeo, who grew up as a briar cutter in the Ligurian town of Taggia.
Romeo Pipe is the brand under which Domenico "Mimmo" Romeo, working in the Ligurian coastal town of Taggia, Italy, produces pipes under his own name. For a long time, the Romeo name was known in pipe circles not as a pipe brand but as a family business supplying cut briar to workshops. This is also the source of the brand's distinguishing trait: the same person who selects and cuts the block also turns it into a pipe.
A Brand Born of the Material
Mimmo Romeo is the son of Filippo — known in his circle as Pippo — Romeo, a well-known briar cutter. His childhood passed at the sawmill where briar blocks were processed and on his father's stock-buying trips in France and Italy; the habit of assessing material by eye was formed during these years. At eighteen he decided to continue his father's trade, and after about four years he was considered an experienced cutter.
Cutting gave him the desire to go beyond the semi-finished briar block. This desire took concrete shape after he met Danish maker Teddy Knudsen, who came to Taggia to buy briar; guided by Knudsen, he focused on learning to drill and, converting part of the sawmill into a pipe workshop, began regular production. According to accounts, this turning point falls in the early 2000s; an exact date does not appear in the records.
