Russ Alan Pipes

The small bench of an American craftsman announced in the late 2000s, who made pipes on weekends alongside a full-time job in Greenville, Rhode Island.

Russ Alan Pipes is a one-man pipe bench set up in the town of Greenville, in the US state of Rhode Island. The brand carries the name of its founder, Russ Alan; the earliest recorded promotion of it was made in the late 2000s, through the maker's own website. In scale it is less a workshop than a personal production kept up alongside a full-time career.

The Maker and the Scale of the Bench

According to records, Russ Alan was born and raised in Rhode Island and took up pipemaking in his early twenties. His actual profession lies in biomedical research; he makes his pipes on weekends and after work. By his own account, he turned to the craft shortly after he started smoking a pipe — meaning his time as a smoker and as a maker began at nearly the same point.

This profile is a familiar example of the American artisan bench, a category that multiplied in the 2000s thanks to the visibility the internet provided. At such benches, output is low, the relationship with the buyer is direct, and the brand name is bound straight to the maker's identity. A learning curve advanced by trial and error rather than a long apprenticeship under a single master is also a common feature of this generation.
