Salim Şener

A meerschaum pipe carver raised in the Eskişehir region. He entered the craft in 1970 working at a quarry, and records show he has carved his flower ornaments since 1985 and his reverse-claw arrangement since 1989.

Salim Şener is a meerschaum pipe carver raised in the Eskişehir region. His name appears in international records, with Turkish letters dropped, as "Salim Sener"; the stamp on his pipes most often shows only "Salim" or "Sener." Records show he entered the craft in the early 1970s, and over more than forty years of production has become known both for figural carving and for ornamental arrangements associated with his own name.

From Quarry to Bench

According to records, Şener's childhood ambition was not carving but teaching; he stood out for his aptitude in drawing. In 1970, at age thirteen, he began working alongside his father in the meerschaum quarries near his village of Margı. After a year at the quarry he turned toward the bench: in 1971 he began an apprenticeship under Ahmet Gök in his village, and from 1972 to 1974 worked in Eskişehir at the workshop of his uncle Ekrem Şener. His listing as born in 1957 in auction records is consistent with these dates.

This route is typical of the pattern in Eskişehir meerschaum carving. In quarry villages, children mostly first took on the extraction and sorting of the stone, moving on to carving only after years of rough-shaping and finishing work alongside a master. Şener's passing through two separate benches is part of this same pattern; moving from a village workshop to a city workshop meant a change in scale and subject repertoire within the craft.
