Pipe Brands
Sergey Dyomin
A Russian pipe maker working in Saint Petersburg, trained under Vladimir Grechukhin and now the senior maker at the PS Studio workshop, known for turning difficult shapes on the lathe.
Sergey Dyomin is a Russian pipe maker working in Saint Petersburg. He both produces pipes under his own name and is considered the senior maker of the joint workshop PS Studio. His name is associated with his insistence on working briar on the lathe, and with his stocky, voluminous bodies.
Pushing the Lathe's Limits
What sets Dyomin apart in the community is a choice of method. In pipe making, complex bodies are usually shaped freehand or with hand tools; Dyomin, by contrast, is known for seeking ways to produce those same shapes on the lathe. Presentation texts about him cite, as examples of this pursuit, a spherical four-sided body and a diamond-cross-section shank worked on the lathe — since these examples rest on a single maker's page, they should not be taken as a verified production record. The general thrust of the approach is clear, though: lathe shaping is being extended into work usually considered the domain of freehand craftsmanship.
His work reads with the line of his master, drawn from industrial and automotive design. He also has a manner of his own: keeping bodies voluminous while still holding their balance is counted as his signature. Precision of measurement is especially highlighted in the mouthpiece materials and the fit of the joint, a rigor that matches the shared manner of the Saint Petersburg school.
