Svend Hangaard

A Danish maker trained in Faaborg who returned to the bench after retiring from prison guard duty, producing around fifty pipes a year.

Svend Hangaard is a Danish maker who works in Faaborg on the island of Fyn, with output staying around fifty pipes a year. He was born in Jutland in 1944. The bench was not his first profession: he worked first as a carpenter, then for many years as a prison guard, and only turned fully to pipemaking after retirement.

Workshop and Craftsmanship

The briar Hangaard uses comes mainly from Corsica and Italy. He follows two finishing routes: either a smooth polish that leaves the grain visible, or sandblasting. For stems he mostly uses vulcanite, more rarely Cumberland. According to records, annual production runs at around fifty pipes, and pieces are stamped only with the maker's surname; the letter- or star-based grading system found among most of his Danish colleagues is absent here. This scale means each piece is treated on its own rather than through mass-production logic.

In terms of form language, Hangaard is regarded as a late representative of the Danish school tradition: lines guided by the hand rather than silhouettes tied to a mold, measured proportions, and long hours devoted to surface work.
