Dunhill Dating: Finishes, Series, and the Year Suffix

A method for narrowing a Dunhill pipe's production year by looking at when its finish name began, whether it carries a special series stamp, and the small year suffix struck on the shank.

The Dunhill dating guide describes a second way to convert the wording on a Dunhill pipe's shank into a production year. The method based on reading the patent number is covered in a separate entry; the path described here looks instead at three separate layers: the pipe's finish name, any special series stamp, and the small year suffix struck around the word ENGLAND.

When these three pieces of information are set against each other, most pipes settle into a single year, or at worst a range of a few years.

What a Finish Tells You Is After

Whatever finish a pipe carries, it cannot be dated earlier than the year that finish came to market; this is the guide's roughest but most reliable sieve. At the head of the sequence is the smooth-polished Bruyere, which arrived with the start of briar production in 1910; this finish carried the letter "A," marking the top grade, on its shank up to 1975. Shell, the first of the sandblasts, was added in 1917. Sources diverge between 1930 and 1931 for Root, which brings out the grain; its shank stamp was long the letter "R." The light-brown sandblast Tanshell is mostly given as 1953, though some records show 1952. A similar hesitation surrounds the red Redbark, between 1972 and 1973; since examples stamped 1972 are known, the earlier date holds up better. Dark brown Cumberland, meanwhile, was introduced in 1980.

Two details outside the finish itself draw a similar boundary. The "Inner Tube" wording struck on the shank is not seen after 1934; the white dot on the mouthpiece, in most sources, is given a start date of 1915.
